RE: Yes on SB 190 and SB 209 — Enhanced Wildfire Prevention
Dear Members of the Assembly:
Thank you for taking action before legislative break to create clear rules and accountability for wildfire mitigation and to help ensure resources will be available to help victims and communities when fires do occur. Of course, there is much more that can and should be done to keep Californians safe, that is why we are encouraging your support of SB 190 (Dodd) and SB 209 (Dodd).
According to CAL FIRE, creating and maintaining defensible space around a home can dramatically increase the structure’s chance of surviving a wildfire and improves the safety of firefighters defending the property.
Please vote YES on SB 190 (Dodd) to require the State Fire Marshal to develop a model defensible space ordinance and informational guides to improve public awareness of the standards.
Additionally, improving our ability to monitor weather conditions that could contribute to a wildfire and creating a system for key decision makers to share information will greatly improve our ability to respond quickly and efficiently to save lives and reduce property damage.
Please vote YES on SB 209 (Dodd) to establish the California Wildfire Warning Center, a statewide network of automated weather and environmental monitoring stations that will conduct fire-weather forecasting and threat assessment to aid in wildfire prevention and response.
As we enter the peak of fire season, the time to act is now. Wildfires won’t wait.
