RE: Yes on AB 38 and AB 1668 — Fire Safety & Increased Workforce for Fighting Wildfires
Dear Members of the Senate:
Thank you for taking action before legislative break to create clear rules and accountability for wildfire mitigation, and to help ensure resources will be available to help victims and communities when fires do occur. Of course, there is much more that can and should be done to keep Californians safe, that is why we are encouraging your support of AB 38 (Wood) and AB 1668 (Carrillo).
Home hardening and establishing defensible spaces is vital to reducing the growth of wildfires. Ensuring resources are available to homes in fire hazard zones is essential to improving California’s ability to prevent, prepare for, and respond to wildfires.
Please vote YES on AB 38 (Wood) to establish the Fire Hardened Homes Revolving Loan and Rebate Fund to provide financial assistance and rebates to owners of eligible buildings to pay for fire hardening improvements and vegetation management costs necessary to create non-combustible defensible space.
Additionally, we need to ensure there is adequate investment in highly trained and qualified women and men who are on the front lines protecting us from wildfires. During the recent fires, prisoners provided critical and cost-effective defense against natural disasters. Sponsored by the California Professional Firefighters, AB 1668 offers a promising career path for those formerly incarcerated individuals who served on California fire lines.
Please VOTE YES on AB 1668 (Carrillo) to open pathways to employment and skill development while increasing the available workforce to provide critical fuels reduction, vegetation management, natural resource protection and support to our front-line firefighters battling California wildfires.
As we enter the peak of fire season, the time to act is now. Wildfires won’t wait.
