Encourage Assembly to Next Approve AB 1054 Prior to Legislative Recess
Sacramento, CA – In response to today’s State Senate approval of AB 1054 (Holden, Burke, Mayes), Action for Wildfire Resiliency spokesperson Robin Swanson released the following statement:
“Action for Wildfire Resiliency is pleased the State Senate recognized the importance of updating the state’s wildfire prevention, accountability and recovery laws prior to legislative recess.
“We urge the Assembly to also vote in support of AB 1054 before July 12th.
“Climate-driven wildfires are the new normal in California. It is not a question of if another catastrophic wildfire hits, but when. Failure to act before the crisis worsens will create further chaos, compromise future wildfire prevention and recovery, and undoubtedly cost all Californians more.”
AB 1054 will:
- Hold the state’s investor-owned electric utilities accountable for completing their wildfire mitigation plans to harden utility infrastructure, clear vegetation and invest in state-of the art weather monitoring.
- Require electric utilities and their shareholders to pay if a utility’s misconduct contributes to a fire.
- Protect victims and communities struck by wildfires by ensuring adequate resources to rebuild when fires do occur.
